A Surface That Supports Fast, Accurate Play

Consistency and predictability are vital to support effective training. If your hockey surface can’t deliver reliable speed and ball control, performance suffers. SmartGrass is built to eliminate that uncertainty.

Every project begins with a stable, uniform base of compacted aggregate or existing concrete for upgrade projects. From there, we install one of our high-performance synthetic hockey turf systems, engineered for elite-level play and rated by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) for international grade games.

For projects requiring additional safety, shockpad underlays can be installed to provide enhanced impact absorption, making the surface suitable for players of all ages.

Built for High-Intensity Hockey Training and Matches

Think about what your facility could look like if your field was never the problem. No post-match repair jobs. No watching a pristine surface deteriorate after a wet winter. No scheduling around a field that needs time to recover.

For facilities managers and club administrators, ordinary grass comes with a hidden cost that goes beyond maintenance, it’s the cancelled bookings, the unusable training days, and the constant compromise between keeping the surface alive and actually using it.

SmartGrass is built for fields that need to perform on demand, not recover from the last time they did. The same surface that hosts a championship match on Saturday is ready to go again on Monday, no intervention required. And when upkeep is needed, it’s as simple as brushing the fibres upright with a stiff broom to keep things looking and performing at their best.

Common Questions

What type of artificial turf is best for field hockey?

SmartGrass offers purpose-built surfaces for field hockey to suit every level of play. Our FastPro 13 is rated by the FIH as a ‘Global Elite’ water-based turf, while our Active 12 and Championship 18 are our premier sand-filled options, offering greater versatility for facilities that host other sports or events alongside hockey. All options are available in a range of colours, with custom line markings and logos to make the field your own. Give us a call to discuss which might be the best fit for your project!

How does artificial hockey turf affect ball speed and control?

Switching to a surface engineered for consistent ball travel and efficient water retention means your field supports performance rather than holding it back. Water retention keeps the surface cool and minimises friction, protecting players from burns and ensuring high-speed ball movement stays fast and true. Instead of battling uneven patches or inconsistent roll, players can focus on refining their skills.

Do we need a shockpad underlay beneath our artificial sports surface?

Most full sized sports fields are installed over an underlay to protect players from injury and absorb shock. A shockpad should especially be considered for school and professional grade applications to meet Head Injury Criteria (HIC).

Shockpads come in different thicknesses, from 10mm to 35mm+. We’ll let you know whether shockpad is appropriate for your project and what thickness is most suitable.

Can SmartGrass resurface an existing hockey field?

SmartGrass can be installed over a range of existing surfaces, including concrete, asphalt, ordinary grass, and existing artificial turf, making it a straightforward solution for upgrading your current field.
